Overview

Our research is focused on understanding the functional architecture of the vertebrate brain. Our research methodologies include computational neuroscience modelling, bio-inspired robotics, ethological analyses of animal behaviour, and psychophysical investigations of human cognition.

Current research emphasises the following themes:
  • The role of integrative brain sub-systems such as the basal ganglia and brainstem reticular formation in action selection
  • Understanding the brain as a layered control architecture
  • Sensorimotor co-ordination in the (i) primate oculomotor system, (ii) rat tactile sensory system
  • Our research is part-funded by grants from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and by the European Union Framework 6 program (Cognitive Systems).
